Summary: Jensen Ackles, FBI agent and infamously quiet alpha, is on a case. His focus is a little divided though since his partner is the one that got away.

Jensen rolls his head to crack his neck and then opens the file that’s been dropped in front of him. A series of murders in Montana have caught the Bureau’s eye and Jensen is going to have to fly out there in the next few hours to meet with the locals and figure out what’s going on. He’s been warned that they’re not looking forward to his arrival.

On top of that the Bureau, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to partner him up with a tech guy. An analyst if he’s being correct. Apparently they suspect that the killer is tracking his alpha victims through some kind of mystical hacking techniques. Which is, granted, not how they explained it to him and just how he deciphered it. But it still seems like overkill to send someone to hold Jensen’s hand and handle all the googling or whatever it is that they’re going to do.

He grabs his go bag and heads for the parking lot. The tech guy is supposed to meet him at his car. Jensen waves at agents and handlers he knows before he finally gets to the parking lot and steps into the cement echo chamber looking around for his car.

It’s never exactly where he remembers it and that-

And there he is. Leaning against Jensen’s car, playing on his phone, is the omega that got away. Jared. Jensen never got his last name. He only had one incredibly perfect and memorable night, and then the next morning Jared told him that he wasn’t a long term guy and took off on him. Now here he is, looking devastatingly good in a suit and completely unaffected by how badly he crushed Jensen’s heart.

“Hi.”

Jensen watches Jared jump, and then his new temporary partner looks up fully and sees Jensen’s face. The expression Jared gives is priceless. It confirms to him once and for all that the connection he felt wasn’t entirely on his end. That Jared has had doubts ever since he walked out.

“Oh. Hi. So your last name is Ackles.”

And Jensen knows instantly from the look on Jared’s face that he knew already who he was partnered with. That this is no surprise to him at all.

He doesn’t call Jared out on it though. He just nods and then gestures for Jared to step aside. He won’t touch the omega again until Jared asks for it. He may know that Jared is having doubts, but he also knows that his momma raised to only do with other people’s bodies what he was given permission to do.

It’s not hard to keep his hands steady when he unlocks the doors even though Jared’s scent is incredibly strong this close. Jensen opens the passenger door for his new partner and then goes around to the driver’s side and slides in.

Jensen knows the second that Jared joins him, that he can smell Jared intermingled with the leather of his old Impala, that this is how it’s supposed to be forever. How it was supposed to always have been.

“You ok with flying?”

Jared looks up from his phone and his face says that he doesn’t understand the question. Jensen repeats it for him.

“Oh! Oh yeah. Yeah I love flying. That’s cool.”

The omega talks with his fingers still on the phone screen, not moving but waiting. That was one of the things that Jensen liked so much about him. That Jared was so full of energy and life the entire time that they were together. Even when they fell asleep tied to each other Jared has been twitching and moving and talking.

He doesn’t talk for the rest of the drive. Jensen lets the weight of the silence rest on Jared as he takes turns smooth and fast, and once they’re about twenty minutes from their destination he gives up on Jared talking and turns on the music.

Jensen is overly pleased when Jared’s foot immediately starts tapping. They’re compatible in that too.

The locals send a deputy out to the airport to pick them up. Jared spends the ride on his phone while Jensen asks for details that they might not have included in the dossier.

Six alphas have been killed, each shot once in the groin and once in the heart, and the clues are sparse. They’ve found a red rose at every one of the crime scenes. And that’s all that they’ve got. No shell casings, no fingerprints, and no DNA. Immaculate crime scenes.

Jared looks up from his phone at the word and then says what Jensen was thinking but wanted to keep to himself.

“So do you think the suspect moved the bodies?”

The deputy’s face screws up and then he nods and looks in the rearview mirror at Jared.

“Yeah. Yeah I guess it could be that.”

They reach the police station and Jensen hangs back and waits for Jared to fall into step with him. They have a great matching rhythm.

“Just as a head’s up, we usually feel out the entire office of the locals before we start sharing details and insights.”

His partner’s eyes cut over to him.

“Why’s that?”

“Well, one because we want to know for certain that whatever we’re saying is right before we taint their investigation and two, because when the scenes are this clean we always keep an eye on the locals in case it’s someone in the department that knows what the CSI teams will be looking for.”

Jared turns his phone off and slips it into his pocket.

“So you’re saying one of these people could be the killer?”

Jensen nods and cuts his eyes around to make sure that no one heard that.

“Yeah. It’s procedure, but also I have a feeling from what I’ve seen in the case files. So just keep your eyes open and look out for a possible suspect ok?”

The problem with tech support usually is that they have field experience, but not as much experience with face to face interaction. Jensen can tell that Jared is nervous. He wants to take his partner’s hand but he knows that he can’t.

Not until Jared asks for it.

They sit down with the team of officers that have been working on the case along with the CSI people that have processed each scene. Jared pulls out a laptop and Jensen is relieved to find that he can focus directly on questioning while Jared types frantically beside him.

Jensen’s suspicion only grows as the locals talk. The suspect list is small and mostly coincidental. The victims have all had some run-in with the law before, and the locals are pretty dismissive about all of them. Each of the six alphas had been pulled for domestic disturbances before. Jensen begins to think that there might be a vigilante among the officers in front of them.

He’s just about to end the meeting when Jared suddenly speaks from out of nowhere, eyes fixed on his screen.

“Why do you think he’s hacking?”

Sheriff Anderson looks at Jared like he’s crazy. Jensen feels his hackles rise at the expression.

“What makes you think it’s a he?”

Jared still doesn’t look up, which puts the Sheriff on edge further. Jensen prepares to step in if this gets ugly. It’s not that common anymore for alphas to be so judgmental about omegas in authority positions, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t small-minded holdovers from the old days.

“I’m just picking a pronoun Sheriff. What part made hacking a suspicion?”

The Sheriff looks over to Jensen, but Jensen keeps his face neutral and his mouth shut. Jared may not be a field agent, but he is an agent and this is their case. It would be best for everyone in the room to remember that and afford him the respect he deserves.

“We found that all six of them had similar emails sent to a private detective before they died. We think that’s how they were picked.”

Jensen feels his gut twist, intuition screaming as Jared simply lifts an eyebrow and smiles in an open and friendly way.

“That wasn’t in your files Sheriff.”

Sheriff Anderson bristles and looks around the room.

“Well I don’t know why. We questioned the detective but he didn’t have much to say that was useful. He’d never taken any of their cases before they died and he has a rock solid alibi.”

Jared smiles broader at that.

“I’ll need to take all the victim’s computers with me if that’s alright?”

The Sheriff gestures and two deputies scurry off before he turns back to Jensen and nods.

“You ready to end this meeting for now agent?”

Jensen purses his lips, rubs the back of his neck, and then turns to Jared just fast enough to catch the hint of surprise in Jared’s face.

“That’s up to you Agent Padalecki. You finished here?”

His partner’s smile becomes a grateful smirk. It’s a complex expression that Jensen is sure only Jared could pull off.

“I am indeed.”

They end up staying the night at a mid-range hotel in the middle of Billings. Jensen takes the bed by the door and watches Jared set up a desktop and two laptops on the desk. There’s barely enough space, and Jared is not a little guy. He’s also not terribly delicate.

And yet there is no terrible fumble, no cracking of screens. Instead Jared gets the entire mobile station set up and then starts hooking up the victim’s computers from the floor. This gives Jensen a beautiful view of Jared’s ass.

Which makes things a little hard for him.

Literally.

“I’m gonna-“

“Listen Jensen-“

They both stop at the same time. Jared’s expressive face is hidden from him under the desk and all he gets for an indication of what Jared was going to say is the tight line of his back and the tautness of his ass.

“No, you go first.”

Jared wiggles a little as he backs up and Jensen thanks God and all the other deities in existence for this moment.

“I was gonna say. If this is awkward for you I can find another room. I don’t think they’re booked up.”

Jensen feels his eyebrow lift up. It’s hard to find words that match what he’s feeling in that moment. A part of him wants to back up, give Jared the space he obviously won’t ask for. The other half of him wants to tell Jared that he’s not the one that seems unsure or awkward here.

“No. Thanks. I’m good.”

Jared’s mouth goes tight for a second and his eyes shift away from Jensen and then back.

“Well. Great. And still just as verbose as always I can see.”

“Did you want me to say more?”

“I wanted- never mind. What’s for dinner?”

Jensen wants to push but he’s already at the edge of his self control.

“I was gonna go out and get a salad. You want one?”

“We’ll take a couple burgers instead.”

Jensen laughs as he turns, spotting just a second of something in Jared’s face as he does so.

“The Royal We now.”

“Yeah. That’s it.”

-----

So maybe Jensen isn’t the greatest at talking. He can admit that. He can also admit that he isn’t the best at knowing when to stop. Maybe he’s reading Jared wrong. Maybe the night in question was really just a simple one off and Jensen should give up and back off.

But he doesn’t believe it. Not deep down where it matters. Because he remembers what it felt like to be wrapped up in Jared. He remembers what it was like talking to him at the bar beforehand. How they laughed together. How Jared looked when he laughed.

He comes back with the food to find Jared scrunched down in his chair, glaring at the screens. Jensen puts a bag of cheeseburgers and fries down in front of Jared and strips off his jacket before collapsing on his own bed. He watches as his new partner eats blindly, fingers tapping away and face screwed up in concentration.

“I think we talked a lot last time.”

Jared doesn’t look up from what he’s doing.

“I talked a lot. Your mouth was busy elsewhere.”

And suddenly his pants are too tight and the room is hot.

“Well. Before that.”

Jared tilts his head and taps twice with his right pointer finger before turning around. There’s a bit of mustard on his upper lip and Jensen wants to lick it off.

“You mean when we were drinking and you were talking me into your bed?”

That hurts. A lot. Because that makes Jensen sound like he’s just some kind of horn dog and that is not the case at all. He doesn’t sleep around much. Hell, if he’s honest he rarely ever does. But Jared is looking at him like it’s a foregone conclusion that Jensen sleeps with everyone that he meets.

“When we were getting to know each other.”

Jared takes a drink of his soda and then turns back to the computer.

“There’s a bar in the lobby here you know.”

“Did you want a drink?”

Jared’s laugh is high, a little nervous, and he turns his face away from the computer before turning it back.

“No. Thanks. I’m not really imbibing these days.”

Jensen sits back and absorbs that while he eats his salad. He watches Jared go back to work. Watches the way his big hands move like lightning over the keys. He thinks about it. About all of it. And then he figures out what to say.

Jared cuts him off.

“I’ve found something weird.”

Jensen gets up at that and crosses the room.

“What is it? A backdoor?”

Jared’s eyes cut over to him, both amused and disgusted.

“No. No and probably don’t pretend you know anything.”

Jensen nods and then leans over Jared’s shoulder to look at the screen.

“So what are we looking at?”

Jared pulls up multiple bank statements and Jensen stares at the lists of numbers blankly.

“What?”

Jared pats his head awkwardly from his angle.

“So pretty but so dumb. Well fear not, that’s what analysts are for. So what you’re looking at is a series of transactions from all six victims’ bank accounts. Apparently they were all using the same escort service. And apparently they all contacted that private detective regarding a specific escort that they used.”

“That’s interesting. But why contact him instead of the agency.”

Jared taps some more and emails come up. Jensen reads them carefully while Jared finishes off his food.

The connection is instant and obvious. Jensen has spent years with the Bureau and he knows all the keywords to listen out for that turn paranoia into a case. Here they have six different Johns that all fell in love with their favorite escort. Which is interesting considering that all of them had been locked up for failing to maintain stable and healthy legal relationships. The concern it seemed came from some mysterious figure following the escort around and threatening him.

“Do you think it was the hooker?”

“Escort.” Jensen responds absentmindedly and then feels the confusion on his face when Jared snorts.

“Let me guess, you’ve been to one before?”

“No. I haven’t. But they’re not immediately the same thing.”

“Ok. Do you think it was the escort?”

Jensen looks at the screen for a minute and then points to the letters.

“No. I think it was whoever is tracking him. I also think we need to talk to this escort. ASAP.”

“Do you think it wasn’t him because he’s an omega?”

Without even considering it Jensen raps his knuckles gently against Jared’s head. He immediately regrets it, but Jared smiles so it seems that it’s ok.

“That’s not it at all. An omega can kill just as effectively as an alpha. No, I think that the roses are throwing off the scent. I think that whoever was following him was tracking down the escort’s customers and killing them out of jealousy. And eventually that obsession will end in said stalker coming after the escort. So I think we’ve got a time limit on finding and stopping this guy before he kills either another customer or the escort and himself.”

Jared’s smile wavers, dies, and then he turns back fully to the computer and starts tapping.

“I’ll find out who we’re looking for.”

-----

Jensen sleeps poorly that night. He dreams of Jared in his arms. He dreams of a shadow stealing in from the window outside, sliding across the bed, and turning Jared cold. When he wakes up in the early hours of the morning Jensen rolls over to see Jared looking at him. Jared immediately flushes and rolls onto his back.

“What?”

“I think that’s my question.”

Jensen honestly believes that Jared will ignore it, but then eventually the analyst gives in.

“I was thinking.”

“What were you thinking?”

“Do you care?”

He bites his lip, then dry scrubs his face while he holds back his initial snappy reaction. Jensen is notoriously bad before coffee and Jared has already sucker punched him once in this state.

“Is there a particular reason I’m the bad guy when you’re the one that turned me down and walked out?”

Jared’s eyes dart back and forth, reflecting and throwing off the light that leaks through the cracked bathroom door.

“No. No I’m being crazy.”

“I don’t think you’re crazy.”

Jared rolls onto his side and looks at Jensen closely. Jensen briefly imagines what it would be like if there wasn’t so much space and extra bed between them. But Jared doesn’t look cuddly right now, he just looks tense.

“Because I was in heat at a bar and you slept with me. Alphas only do that for one reason.”

And Jensen? Flabbergasted.

“You were not in heat.”

“Yes I was.”

“No you weren’t.”

Jared huffs angrily and sits up.

“I think I know my cycle a little better than you. I think I know I was in heat.”

“Well I didn’t. So I think that should count for something. I slept with you because I really liked you, and because you suggested it and I gave in. I slept with you because you were funny and smart. I slept with you because you’re incredibly hot. I did not sleep with you for any other reason.”

“Oh. Well. Oh. It was the first day. So maybe. You didn’t smell it.”

Jensen sits up too.

“Is that why you told me you weren’t interested? Because you thought I just used you in your heat?”

Jared nods, biting into his bottom lip delicately. It’s sexy, but Jensen’s mind is nowhere near sex right now.

“What, in all of that long night, made me seem like the kind of asshole that would do that?”

Jared’s lip wobbles and Jensen’s anger wavers mightily.

“I just. You’re a field agent. You guys. You know. And I’m an analyst. The dorks.”

“I didn’t even know you were in the FBI. We never talked about work.”

Jared’s face turns bright red and he’s looking anywhere now but at Jensen.

“I knew about you. I’d seen you around before. I worked on a case with you but I was teleconferencing in so…you know, you never saw me.”

“Can we just start over? Meet again? Maybe this time you’ll judge me on my merits and not the reputation of my peers?”

Jared stands up then, sheets pooling off of him and the boxers he’s sleeping in hugging his ass and showing off all the long lines of his legs.

“No. I’m sorry Jensen. We can’t start over.”

He goes into the bathroom, and Jensen is left trying to understand why nothing can ever go right when it matters most.

-----

They don’t talk for the rest of the morning. Jared starts typing again and Jensen goes to a diner and gets them both breakfast before heading over to the station to do more research. The locals are riled up, energized no doubt by the arrival of the agents and the possibility of solving it before them.  It happens that way a lot. And Jensen never minds that really. Sometimes it works, and all that matters is finding the bad guy.

He gets a text from Jared as he’s digging through the case files for each victim. There’s an odd pattern to the domestic disturbances. Something Jensen can’t quite put his finger on. They’re all recent, and none of them has a victim or witness statement. There’s no history of violence.

I found the escort. See the attached file. I’m going to stay here and dig deeper.

Jensen swallows back his disappointment and opens up the attached screenshot. It has an address for an escort business and a name. He puts his phone back in his pocket and heads for his car. Sheriff Anderson calls out to him on the way.

“Hey! Wait up!”

He stops and turns, and then the world goes black.

------

When Jensen wakes up the first thing he thinks is that he probably has a concussion. The second is that he’s made a terrible mistake not paying closer attention to his gut.

Or getting so wrapped up in Jared and what was going on there that he didn’t keep his guard up.

“Hello?”

Jensen lifts his head to see an incredibly beautiful young man across the basement from him. The escort, Ferdinand.

“Hi. I’m Agent Jensen Ackles.”

Ferdinand’s eyes water and he pulls on the ropes holding him to the basement support beam. Jensen is similarly trussed up.

“Hi. I’m Ferdinand. Are you the cavalry?”

He shakes his head and then instantly regrets it.

“No. Not today. I’m sorry.”

Ferdinand looks around the room.

“Agent? Do you have a partner?”

“Yes. And lucky for us he’s super smart. Unlucky for us he hates me.”

“Well. He doesn’t hate me right?”

Jensen fights the urge to shake his head.

“No. He doesn’t. That’s right. So we have that.”

Upstairs a door slams and then heavy feet stomp overhead to the other side of the house. Jensen starts fighting the ropes. Just hoping.

“Please. Someone has to stop him. He’s so crazy. I don’t think either of us will live long if your partner doesn’t show up.”

“Can you get loose?”

Ferdinand shoots him a look that Jensen thinks he totally would have earned if not for the massive head trauma he’s currently suffering from.

“So that’s a no. But it’ll be fine because Jared will get here and we’ll be fine.”

He doesn’t even believe it himself, but nothing’s going to be gained from making Ferdinand cry.

The door to the basement opens and Sheriff Anderson comes clomping down. He has a handful of roses that he lays down at Ferdinand’s feet before he heads over to Jensen.

“You asshole.”

Jensen lifts an eyebrow and then smiles with all of his teeth.

“I don’t think I’m the one that earned that title here.”

The sheriff punches him, and Jensen feels his lips split against his teeth. This isn’t an action movie, Jensen can’t just drop a witty retort in between each punch to egg the sheriff on and keep his focus on Jensen. It’s not necessary though because once the sheriff gets started he doesn’t stop. He just keeps punching and punching until his hands close around Jensen’s throat and the world, or what is left of it in Jensen’s right eye, narrows down into a hazy tunnel.

And then there’s a shot.

The sheriff’s eyes go wide, his hands tighten hard, and then he slumps and falls. And Jensen can breathe. On the other side of what used to be a sheriff is Jared. He is standing in perfect manual formation with a gun in his hand and a blank and waxy expression.

Jensen thinks of how grateful he is. Of how heroic and amazing Jared is for coming out here despite only being an analyst with little combat field experience.  How incredible Jared is for figuring it all out, probably faster than Jensen.

He thinks all these things as he passes out.

----

When Jensen wakes up in the hospital he’s pretty sure that there’s no amount of painkillers that they can give him to stop the ringing in his head. He’s wrong. After several hours of tests and poking and prodding they release him to Jared’s care, and the analyst drives him back to the hotel. Jared actually hooks Jensen’s arm over his shoulder and practically carries him back to the room before laying him carefully down on the bed and starting to unlace his shoes.

“You don’t gotta.”

Jared keeps going, pulling his shoes off and then his socks. He starts on Jensen’s belt and Jensen puts a hand over his.

“You don’t gotta.”

Jared smiles, something tight and unsure, and then goes back to his work.

“You scared me.”

Jensen swallows thickly and then lets go of Jared’s hands and lies completely back.

“Sorry.”

“You scared me a lot. You shouldn’t have gone out without me. I’m your partner.”

“Told me to go alone.”

“I don’t care what I told you, it’s what I wanted you to do that you should have done.”

Jensen senses this is a bigger picture than he’s capable of seeing.

“You know I’m alpha right? We’re a bit dumb.”

Jared has his pants and boxer briefs off. He starts unbuttoning Jensen’s bloody shirt.

“Yeah. I know. And it wasn’t fair of me to say that. I didn’t mean it for anything but today.”

He nods and then gets dizzy. Jared reaches out and holds his face while anchoring him with his eyes.

“I’m pregnant.”

Jensen swallows hard. He’s on a lot of drugs.

“I’m high.”

Jared huffs, lets go of his face, and then strips him of his shirt and undershirt.

“Wait no. I mean. Did that just happen?”

Jared straddles him and puts his face close.

“I’m pregnant. You’re the father. I’ve been working on how to tell you.”

Jensen, because after all he’s worked out his entire life for this reason, sits up just enough to kiss Jared. It’s sweet and warm. Simple. Thanks to the drugs it doesn’t even hurt his lip.

“I’m in love with you.”

Jared laughs against his mouth and then pushes Jensen back down gently.

“I’m not. I’m not sure if I’m in love with you yet. I think I am. I think if I’m not I will be. But more importantly I think that if you don’t feel up to fucking me right now you definitely won’t tomorrow morning.”

“I won’t be able to lick you right.”

It’s only a little bit shameful that he tears up when he says it. Jared strips fast, too fast, but Jensen won’t complain.

“That’s ok. I don’t need it right now. But I’ll make you do it double when you’re all healed up.”

Jensen’s never heard a better offer in his life. He pulls Jared closer and runs a finger down his back and over the swell of the world’s sweetest ass cheeks before pushing it inside to feel the warm wet heat of Jared’s hole. Jared moans and the smell of him washes over Jensen.

It’s hard work to get Jared in the right position. He pulls the omega onto his side, hooks Jared’s leg over his hips, and then slides in slow and deep. It’s like coming home. It’s the most amazing thing he’s ever experienced. He has a feeling that despite how sappy it sounds in his head it will always be the most amazing thing he’s ever experienced.

Jared takes over for a bit as Jensen flounders in half-baked thoughts and sensations. He clenches down hard on Jensen’s dick, and then laughs low and deep in his throat as he starts to move his hips. Jensen hooks one arm up to grab something and get stability and then snakes the other arm around to grab Jared’s cock.

Talking doesn’t seem entirely necessary for a while. They fall right back into the rhythm of each other with only minimal grunts and adjustments. And then Jared is moving on Jensen’s cock and Jensen is moving as much as he can to facilitate the experience. He tilts his pelvis just enough so that he can circle Jared’s stretched rim with his thumb and collect Jared’s slick to help him have less friction when he grabs his cock again and starts to jack him off.

And then Jared starts talking.

“At first I thought you were a jerk. I didn’t really think it but I- I just thought- oh fuck- I thought you would turn me down and I could beat you to it. And then I started looking through your personnel file and asking agents about you and I realized I was- Jensen- I realized I was wrong. Oh fuck you gotta move faster with me.”

Jensen takes a breath, fights back the dizziness, and starts pumping his hips faster. His knot is just getting big enough to tug on Jared’s hole as it fights to stay in.

“But then I figured out I was pregnant and I had robbed you of that. And I didn’t know what to do and I was scared to lose you this time for the right reasons. So I shifted some things around so we would be partners.”

He laughs, pressing his face into the wall of Jared’s back muscles and nipping the skin over his spine.

“I love you. I don’t care how we got here. I love you.”

Jared comes. It’s a surprise, and Jensen can tell that goes for both of them. Jared is gasping, curling in on himself a little as he tightens down hard on Jensen.

It’s more than enough. Jensen gets locked inside of Jared’s clenching hole and starts to empty as he strokes Jared’s side and shudders against him.

“Thank you. For forgiving me.”

“Thanks for giving me a chance. And being my first stalker.”

Jared elbows him, and Jensen laughs as he presses his face back against the overly hot, sweaty skin and nips again. One day, when Jared says it’s ok, Jensen will put his bite on him. Jensen will get Jared’s bite.

And one day in the much less distant future they’ll have a kid. Jensen lays his hand on Jared’s stomach gently.

“Do you know the sex yet?”

Jared shakes his head.

“Can I pick the name? Since you were so mean?”

Jared shakes his head again.

“Oh come on? Why not?”

Jared’s hand slides over his and links fingers with him.

“Because you already forgave me you sucker.”

And just like the first night they were together Jensen falls asleep, tied with Jared, a smile on his lips.

This is great! I love how this is a switch in temperament from the usual a/b/o fics. Love how Jensen is portrayed, especially with the constant reminding himself that he can only move forward with Jared's consent! And mutual pining... aahhh! Lovely. :)

:D I'm so very very glad you liked it! A/B/O is so great for being so versatile and flexible for roles and behaviors. It makes a great trope, it makes a great trope to invert, it's just great. Thank you again for reading and commenting, and especially for enjoying!
